    The invention of a mythical past for propaganda purposes has often been a feature of populist nationalism, nostalgia for an invented past that never existed. It gives them something, however false, to offer voters that is sharply in focus, especially if it aligns with prejudices peoples want to see carried out. The promise to revert to some mythical state of past perfection when all these things they hate so much didn’t exist. Whereas progressives talk about a future that has never existed either, and often sound rather fuzzy and unclear in comparison. Sadly
